Provenance research at Vincenzo Vela Museum

Provenance research means establishing the origin and past ownership details of artworks. It involves finding out where a work comes from, to whom it used to belong and the circumstances behind its inclusion in a collection.

This is a fundamental duty for museums. Provenance research helps to shed light on historical interconnections and document collections in a transparent way.

There is a particular question mark over cultural goods acquired in problematic historical contexts. This mainly applies to works with a connection to looted Nazi art or other items acquired during a historically encumbered period. The aim is to identify these holdings, categorise them and be transparent about the ensuing process.

As a federal institution, Vincenzo Vela Museum performs this task in close cooperation with other Swiss federal museums. The provenance research takes place within the context of the Federal Office of Culture’s common strategy.

Previous work

Provenance research relating to Swiss federal collections was first systematically established in 1998 in a basic report.

The provenance research for Vincenzo Vela Museum was deepened and updated in 2018. The results of this work have been published and form a basis for further research.

Provenance research is now an inherent part of institutional work and anchored in the conceptual basis of the collection.

Current work

Provenance research is an ongoing process. New archives and sources become available, current information is reassessed and questions are refined further. The results of other research projects are also relevant.

Previous findings regarding the historical holding and the new acquisitions of Vincenzo Vela Museum are currently being reviewed and updated accordingly. The aim is to document the provenance of the works as completely and transparently as possible.

An updated status report is scheduled by the end of 2026.

Opportunities for archiving and research

Vincenzo Vela Museum has archive, photographic and documentation holdings with significant scope for provenance research. The Swiss Federal Archives in Bern also contain valuable material, certificates and documents pertaining to the Vela family estate and to the historical origins of the museum.

Vincenzo Vela Museum also provides its archive and documentation holdings and its specialist library to external researchers within the scope of the statutory provisions and supports academic research whenever possible. Please contact the museum if you require further information.
