The destiny of sculpture?

4 October through 22 November 2009 – extended until 13 December 2009

An exhibition mounted in collaboration with Visarte – Società delle arti visive, Ticino

In its analysis of the world of contemporary art, Visarte-Ticino presents the Museo Vela with seven artists working in the Canton who attempt to answer the question of the future of sculpture.
Through their very different works they demonstrate seven ways to make "sculpture" today: not just the capacity to occupy the space but the desire to present objects to the mind's eye.
The installations in the Villa's park and the main room of the museum provide a varied look at the expressive potential of contemporary sculpture, something very different to the traditional, realist statuary of the nineteenth century of which Vincenzo Vela was one of the leading exponents.

Each using his or her own artistic language, the artists Alessandra Angelini, Ivana Falconi, Cristina Lifart, Penelope Margaret Mackworth-Praed, Milvia Quadrio, Régine Ramseier and Hanspeter Wespi leave the concept of traditional sculpture behind them in their choice of subject matter and materials, dimensions and techniques. They employ irony and freshness of ideas in their interpretation of architecture and landscape, in a continuous and direct confrontation with space, through the playful use of materials, installations and conceptual projects.
